Beilby Porteous was born in Sheffield, England, on 7 January 1896. He was educated at Sheffield University and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he gained a first class honours degree in modern history. After working as a history teacher for two years at Marlborough College, he became an assistant editor of The Times Literary Supplement in 1922. In 1924 he published his first book, The Life of St
Francis of Assisi. His other works include St Francis of the Sun (1925), St Francis on the American Frontier (1927), The Mysticism of St. Francis of Assisi (1929) and St Francis on the Mount of Olives (1930).
His spiritual autobiography, Restless Years (1933), is a deeply moving account of his early struggles with depression and alcoholism. He spent his last years living in one room in a London hospital because he could not afford to pay for its upkeep, and died there on 18 March 1976, aged 88.
